Many cities in Florida are renowned for their outstanding musical offerings, spanning a wide array of genres and styles. So it’s no wonder that a holiday in Florida often yields exceptional musical experiences for many holidaymakers. Choose Florida as your next US holiday destination, and you could partake in one of the state’s most celebrated attributes.

Of course, most of Florida’s musically inclined cities host music performances on a consistent basis, enabling travellers and locals alike to enjoy music no matter what part of the year, week, or even day. However, many cities are particularly known for seasonal music festivals – Miami being one of the most prominent. Home to the Winter Music Conference, Miami sees countless electronic music enthusiasts flock to the city each year to partake in the outburst of musical excitement. The Conference showcases the talents of over 200 music artists, guaranteeing a truly memorable experience for anyone who loves dance and electronic music.

A whole new style of composing music and writing lyrics has arrived in the form of digital songwriting.

By using hi tech home studio equipment and software, you can now record your music and lyrics at the same time as you actually write your songs.

In the Sixties and Seventies, the most any young songwriter could have hoped for, would have been a 10/50/50 song deal with a music publisher – any music publisher. Whether or not the songs would have been published was another matter. At that time, the ratio of works accepted but not actually published, may have been less than eight in every hundred. In reality, most songs acquired by publishers were left on the shelf to gather dust. If any were eventually published, mainly because an artist had covered (recorded) his work, it would have made the average songwriter feel like he’d won a week in heaven – especially if they had printed his music. If you could go back in a time machine and reveal to mister Sixties songwriter/producer that today he could not only record, arrange and mix his own songs on a virtual home studio, he could also publish, release, distribute and, with the aid of midi, print off the sheet music (in several keys) all on the same day – he would probably have had a heart attack!

So what is this thing called digital music and why did it have such an impact on the music industry? Believe it or not digital was first introduced as a kind of “upgrade” to its older cousin ‘ analog. Actually, there are still some recording artists and producers today who prefer analog claiming there’s a quality or originality to it that cannot be “captured” or reproduced using digital. Recordings in the Sixties, for example, are famous for having a distinctive analog sound of their own. Perhaps so – but most today, I would argue, prefer digital, not just for recording, but also for the advantages in transmitting, distributing, storing, retrieving, and even reconfiguring electronically.

Great musical compositions coupled with wonderfully touching lyrics are something all songwriters strive to achieve. To this end, the following easy steps will guide you on your path to successful songwriting. Who knows, you could be the next Bob Marley, the next Kurt Cobain … or whoever.

First of all, it’s important to remember that the right attitude and mindset will always bring the best results, whatever you do. Songwriting is something you should enjoy, never turning it purely into a chore. Having said that, there’s no doubt you’ll also need put in some hard graft! But, keep your mind free and you’re sure to hear lots of great ideas popping in and out of it.

Title Selection

One of the most overlooked aspects when writing any song is title selection.

Your song title gives listeners an idea as to what they can expect from your song, what it’s about, and its type. In a way, it becomes the soul of your song and, ideally, when your audience hears the title, it should get their imagination working. Your title should be short, catchy, appealing, and easy to remember.

So, how do you come up with great song titles? Well, once you’ve got the hang of it, good titles are not that difficult to find. You need to get into the habit of keeping your eyes and ears open for them … they could be everyday phrases twisted round, something you hear in conversations, on television, or read in magazines and newspapers. Do remember to immediately jot them down though.

Songwriting contests offer the biggest platform for budding songwriters to transform themselves from amateurs to professionals in the world of music. Moreover, winners achieve popularity and many music brands approach such artists asking them to write songs for them.

Therefore, if you are among such people who want to make it big by participating in the contest, then here are few tips, which will improve your chances of winning the contest. First, identify your genre and write the song accordingly.

Select the subject of the song, which is close to you. Experts say that, individuals can write the ultimate song only when they write about people, emotions that resonate with them. So, try to convey your feelings through the song. Make use of rhymes and choruses in alternating pattern.

To be more successful in song writing, use rhythmic portion to convey the story of your song. Punctuate the rhythmic lines with easy chorus, which encloses the message of song.

Contemporary Christian music has the power to educate and inspire. Music, of the Christian variety or any other variety, has the power to inspire emotions, to transport memories in time, and to make us thankful for the blessings in our life. The truth is that there are many biblical lessons that people have learned and remember thanks to the gospel songs that they heard in their youth. Today, young and old alike are still learning and being inspired by Christian music. No matter if you prefer traditional Christian music or upbeat Christian rock, there is an artist out there who will send chills down your spine with their heartfelt lyrics.

The internet has made it possible to download a vast amount of music free of charge. There are literally millions of Christian songs in every language imaginable available online. All you have to do to find your favorite music by your favorite artists is to type a few keywords into a search box and Voila! You may find hundreds of sources for your Christian music in seconds.

Let’s face it, pop music played on the radio is getting trashier and trashier, and the lyrics lazier and lazier. Popular music played on the radio is easy to find in your local Virgin Mega store. You can also generally find some old classics, albeit mostly greatest hits compilations, in these large high street chains. But how do you find out about alternatives to the mass produced pop? There is, of course, still good music around, its just a question of knowing how to find out about these artists in the first place.

Back in the day, the way music buffs used to find out about good music, was through hanging out at record stores, on moth-eaten sofas, whilst talking to other music enthusiasts and asking the owner to give some recommendations a whirl, right there on the stores’ record player. Nowadays however, try asking the staff at one of the music megastores to play a record, that you want to hear, to the whole store, and you might, at best receive a bemused look! Ok, there are those headphone stations where you can sample the latest releases – but more often than not the tunes selected for these stations are not the rare musical gems that the music enthusiast is looking for.

Although we may have lost the culture of going and spending a day down at the record store, the discovery of good new music can still be exciting. And nowadays we don’t have to rely on the knowledge of a couple of friends, but rather we have online sites which can recommend endless groups and songs based on your specifications of the type of music that you like or are looking for.

The two music recommendation sites which I consider the best available right now are “www.last.fm” and “www.grooveshark.com”. Last.fm allows you to type in the name of an artist you like, and it will play a continuous stream of similar music. You can skip any track which you don’t like. It also gives comprehensive information about endless different artists from the mainstream to the alternative, as well as opinions from users about particular tracks, and has an online community which you can join to meet people with similar music tastes. Last.fm is free in the USA, UK and Germany, but costs $3 in all other countries. Grooveshark, which has become popular since 2009, also provides a radio recommendation system for free. The difference between Grooveshark and last.fm is that on “Grooveshark” it is the users which have uploaded the tracks, whereas the last.fm company has its own music database; and on “Grooveshark” you can replay tracks and play whichever part of a track you want, as opposed to not being able to control this on last.fm. Grooveshark is free with adverts, or you can pay a subscription of $3 to remove banner ads.

When it comes to writing a song, a hook is anything in the song that helps the listener remember it. We’re not talking about a device to catch fish here. Hooks are points of reference that keep us interested and focused on the song. Some hooks evoke emotion which is the main purpose of a song in the first place. Your songs must have verse, chorus, bridge, intro, outro, lift and all the rest. But the hooks must be there if you want listeners to remember your songs. Sometimes a hook might be a new sound no one has heard before. Many times instrumental and technical hooks can be fun to produce. Most hooks are created by the writers themselves. But sometimes they are created by the producer or engineer after the fact. Following are different types of hooks you can use to help make your songs more memorable. Try some of them in your next musical creation.

Title Hooks
Hooks that Are part of the title stick in your mind because they are usually so clever and unusual. They are often so descriptive that they forecast what the song is about. They are used to get and keep your attention. And if they are carefully chosen, they usually do their job. Titles like: “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me”, “The Streak” and “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head”.

Chorus Hooks

A chorus is the summation of what the song is intended to say, it’s central message. Often the chorus is the thing that stays with you. Like these songs that follow:

I have had some friends tell me that they think composing music is easy, and that anyone with a pen can do it. Yeah right. Anyone can do it, but only a select few can REALLY do it. Composing a song is much like being an author. We all have the tools to write (everyone I guess has a brain!), but that does not necessarily make us a NY Times best-selling author. It is often quite frustrating to know that some people, including professional composers, can compose a hit song in a breeze. Equally frustrating is finding yourself always searching for ideas, you can write lyrics but without music or music without lyrics, or writing one bad song after another. Such frustating experiences have led many to believe that they are incapable of writing a hit song, thus abandoning such pursuits.
